VAUPES 6D5N
Vaupés is one of the most remote departments and places in Colombian geography. This makes it a unique area with a high level of conservation, biodiversity, and preservation of indigenous cultures. During our expedition, it will be possible to visit several very authentic indigenous communities that, due to their geographic isolation, still preserve many of their traditions and customs. We will be able to see spectacular landscapes and unique and little-known attractions such as Cerro Tuy, Cerro Morroco, the Cananary River, and the wonderful and enigmatic Apaporis River.

(06:00 - 8:00)
Flight from Bogotá to the City of Mitú, in the department of Vaupés (or you can optionally fly the day before).
On this day, we will take a 40 mins. private charter flight from Mitú to the indigenous village of Buenos Aires. Once there we will be received by the indigenous people and the militars that have a base there, guaranteeing security in the region. Then you will have lunch and a 2-hrs navigation in slow boat by the Cananarí River to the community of Morroco. Once at the community, you will visit the “maloca” (indigenous spiritual meeting house) where we will set hammocks for sleeping and will meet the spiritual leaders. At night you will have a traditional dinner based on fish, and local ingredients, having also a time to talk and share traditions of the indigenous.(07:00) We will have breakfast at the indigenous community, which is located in front of the Cerros de Morroco, which are spectacular tepuis that emerge from the jungle. We will cross the Cananary river in boats and after some indications, we will prepare to ascend the Morroco tepui (which are ancient mountains only found in the Amazon jungle, being also some of the oldest rock formations in the world), where we will find the best spot to spend the night in an outdoors camp-site in the middle of the jungle, where we will prepare dinner and will rest for the next day
(07:00) Breakfast and then the beginning of the climb towards the top of the Morroco Tepui, where we will aim to get to the rock-art paintings at the top of this Tepuy. Once there, you will have free time to admire this majestic place before heading to another gorgeous spot: La Ventana al mundo (The window to the world) where you will have
a great view of the vast Amazon jungle. After sometime there, you will have lunch and then will start the trek back to the community of Morroco, where we will visit its “chagras” (traditional plantations) where they plant their food and in their traditional sacred medicines. At night you will have dinner and the ancestral dance of the Yuruparí. In which the community is ready to talk, dance and pray to their Gods, which is an unscripted and spontaneous cultural experience in danger of extinction. In addition to being an intangible heritage of humanity declared by UNESCO.(07:00) Breakfast and farewell with the authorities of the Morroco Community, where we will start a boat ride towards the wonderful Apaporis River, witnessing the magnificent Raudal del Jirijirimo. This is the most sacred place for the indigenous tribes of the area, being an inspiration for several legends and having probably the most spectacular and powerful waterfall of Colombia. After visiting this place, we will have lunch and will continue the boat ride back to Buenos Aires community, where we began the experience and we will set a campsite with hammocks in the “maloca”.
(07:00) Breakfast at the community, where we will wait for the charter plane that will take us back to Mitú. On the plane we will pass by vast well-preserved Amazon territories before landing at Mitú and having lunch there. The departure time will depend on the weather conditions and the exact hour can not be guaranteed in advance. In the afternoon you will have a guided hike towards Cerro Urania, which is a place where we can see the dense jungle from above and will be the last chance to enjoy a great afternoon in this isolated region that has a high level of conservation, not very visited and reserved for few privileged visitors that can make this unique journey. You will spend the last night in a hotel of Mitú.
(07:00) Breakfast at the hotel or restaurant of the town and then you will have the free morning to discover the place before being taken to the airport, where you will take your flight back to Bogota. For this destination we need to mention that the plane connections are normally stable, but sometimes weather conditions might represent delays or unexpected postponements of flights, so you need to be aware of it in order to organize your previous and posterior plans after this experience that is very unique, but also has very demanding logistics susceptible of changes mainly due to climate conditions and indigenous authorities’ rules. The flights from Bogota to Mitú and back are notincluded but can be coordinatedwith us, as well as additional nights in order to match the
dates for this experience.
